The installation

01 · The brief

A newly constructed stone self build, glazed from ground floor to gable in aluminium Heritage windows and doors that read as traditional steel — narrow frames, fine glazing bars, black throughout — while performing to modern new-build standards.

02 · The property

Newly built stone house in West Yorkshire.

03 · The challenge

A live self-build programme with 36 openings across four elevations, all in newly dressed stone, several of them non-standard shapes — triangular gables and a full-height narrow light — with no tolerance for cumulative setting-out error across the elevation.

04 · The approach

Early involvement with the builder to agree structural opening sizes, then a full measured survey of every opening after the stonework was complete and before manufacture. Georgian bar layouts were drawn as a set rather than window by window, so bar spacing aligns horizontally across each elevation, and the non-standard gable and side-light units were manufactured to survey.

05 · Design decisions

  • Thirty-two windows and four doors specified across four elevations, with sizes agreed before the stonework rose
  • Georgian bar spacing kept visually consistent across stairwell lights, paired casements and gable windows
  • Fixed triangular gable glazing to both gables, sized to the stone and surveyed once dressed
  • A tall, narrow full-height light beside the rear entrance
  • Black frames against warm honey-coloured gritstone, with slim sightlines keeping rooms bright

06 · Result

The largest single self-build package of 2025: a new stone house that reads as though it has always been there, with uninterrupted views to the trees from inside.

07 · Planning

No planning or conservation requirements are recorded for this project.
