Window Replacement in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
The short answer
Inside the National Park, the National Park Authority is the planning authority. Replacing windows on an unlisted house may still be permitted development, but listing, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and planning conditions (common on barns) can change that. Check your address is inside the boundary first.

Key takeaways
- Check the boundary — it moved in 2016
- The NPA publishes design guidance
- Barns often have window conditions
Towns like Skipton are outside; villages like Grassington are inside. The Authority's guidance favours designs that respect Dales building traditions, while allowing well-justified contemporary work.
When it works well
- Designs that respect the building's character
When it may not
- Assuming the same rules as the district outside the park
Common mistakes
- Not checking the boundary
